What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

The Peak Performance Women Helium Utility Down Hood is a lightweight, packable down jacket filled with 700 fill power duck down in a 90/10 down-to-feather ratio. It is built for cold, dry conditions and works both as a standalone outer layer and as a warm insulating layer under a shell jacket. The whole jacket compresses into its own side pocket, so it can travel with you all day and come out only when you stop moving.

Who is the Helium Utility Down Hood for?

This down jacket suits a woman who wants warmth she can carry: ski touring and alpine days where you need insulation at the top of the climb, belay and rest stops while climbing or hiking, and cold winter travel. It is not the jacket for sustained rain or wet snow, and not for high-output efforts in mild weather, where down traps more heat and moisture than you want.

How warm is this down jacket?

Warmth comes from 700 fill power duck down, 90/10 down/feather, held in place by quilting in the Helium pattern so the fill stays evenly distributed. The ultralight nylon ripstop shell is wind resistant and water repellent with a PFC-free DWR finish, which handles dry snow and brief showers but not prolonged precipitation. Keep the down dry: once soaked, it loses loft and the warmth goes with it.

Which size should you choose?

The Peak Performance Women Helium Utility Down Hood comes in S, M and L. Check your chest and waist measurements against the Peak Performance women's size chart on this page before ordering, and consider how you plan to wear it: on its own over a midlayer, or underneath a shell jacket, which is how it is designed to be layered. The fixed hood adjusts in height and width, and the sleeve hems close with a cord stopper.

How is the Helium Utility Down Hood constructed?

The Peak Performance Women Helium Utility Down Hood pairs an ultralight nylon ripstop face fabric with duck down at 700 fill power in a 90/10 down/feather blend. Ripstop keeps a very thin, densely woven shell from tearing and stops the down migrating out; the quilting in the Helium pattern divides the fill into chambers so it stays where it is needed. A PFC-free Durable Water Repellent treatment makes the surface shed light moisture, and the tight weave gives the jacket wind resistance without a membrane, which in turn lets air pass more freely than a laminated shell would. There is no water column and no seam sealing here, and the construction is not meant to provide them.

Is it suitable for ski touring and climbing?

Yes, as stop-and-go insulation. On a tour you climb in a midlayer, then pull the Helium Utility Down Hood out of its own side pocket at the top for the transition. On a climbing day it is the belay layer that goes over everything while you wait. The sleeve pocket and zippered chest pocket keep small items reachable, and the two zippered hand pockets stay usable with the hood up. Where it stops: there is no powder skirt, no lift pass pocket and no RECCO reflector, so for resort skiing in bad weather, wear it under a shell jacket rather than treating it as the shell. In storm conditions it should never be your only outer layer.

What is it made of and how do you look after it?

The shell is an ultralight nylon ripstop, wind and water resistant; the insulation is duck down at 700 fill power, 90/10 down/feather. Nylon ripstop is abrasion-sensitive against rock and ski edges compared with a heavy hardshell face fabric, so treat it as a lightweight garment. Down needs loft to work: store the jacket hanging on the loop inside the neck rather than compressed in its pocket between trips, and dry it thoroughly if it gets damp. Follow the care label sewn into the garment when washing.

What makes this a more responsible down jacket?

The down in the Peak Performance Women Helium Utility Down Hood is certified to the Responsible Down Standard and fully traceable through the Track My Down® programme, so the sourcing can be followed back. The water repellent finish is PFC-free, and the jacket contains recycled fibers. A down jacket that can be repaired, kept lofted and worn for many seasons is the practical side of that story.

Down (700 fill)
Down (700 fill)
Down with a 700 fill power delivers a high warmth-to-weight ratio. Fill power measures how much air the down traps, and therefore how much warmth it holds for its weight. At 700 the insulation stays light and highly compressible, so the garment packs down small and still lofts back up. This grade suits ultralight jackets worn on cold, dry days and works well as an insulating layer under a shell.
