What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.
Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 3/4 leg ends above the ski boot cuff
- Flatlock seams and no side seam on the leg
- 88/12 polyester-elastane knit, quick-drying
- No insulation: needs a midlayer in deep cold
- Print placement differs from the photos
- Polyester holds odour more than merino
The Peak Performance Spirit AOP 3/4 Short Johns is a men's synthetic base layer worn directly against the skin under ski trousers, with a 3/4 leg that is cut to end above the ski boot. The fabric is a stretch knit of 88% polyester and 12% elastane, specified as moisture-wicking and quick-drying, and it carries a seasonal all-over print. Flatlock seams and the absence of a side seam keep hard edges away from the skin where boot shells and ski pants press against the leg.
Who are these short johns for?
This is the base layer for a skier who wants a thin, stretchy first layer that dries fast and stops just above the boot cuff, instead of a thick thermal legging. It suits alpine skiing, ski touring, freeride and other high-output winter days. It is not a standalone or outer layer, and it is the wrong choice if you want full-length leg coverage, if you wear low-cut footwear, or if you specifically want a merino base layer for odour control.
How does the Peak Performance Spirit AOP base layer handle sweat?
Warmth is not the job here. The single-layer 88% polyester, 12% elastane knit has no insulation; it moves moisture off the skin and dries quickly so sweat does not sit against you on a chairlift or a skin track. On cold days you build warmth on top of it with a midlayer and a shell.
Which size should you choose?
The cut is next-to-skin and slim, so it should sit close to the body with no excess fabric. The Peak Performance Spirit AOP 3/4 Short Johns comes in S, M, L and XL; check the size chart on this page against your own measurements before ordering, and remember that layering room is not needed under a base layer.
How are the Peak Performance Spirit AOP 3/4 Short Johns constructed?
The Peak Performance Spirit AOP 3/4 Short Johns is built from one layer only: an 88% polyester, 12% elastane stretch knit with no membrane, no lining and no insulation. The construction detail that matters on skis is the seaming. The seams are flatlocked, so they lie flat against the skin instead of forming a ridge, and the leg is made without a side seam at all. That removes the one line that usually runs straight down the outside of the thigh, exactly where a ski pant seam and a boot cuff sit. An elastic waistband with Peak Performance branding holds the tights in place under a trouser waist.
Are these short johns suitable for ski touring?
Yes, within their limits. The Spirit AOP 3/4 Short Johns from Peak Performance is specified as moisture-wicking and quick-drying, which is what a high-output day asks of a base layer: uphill on skins, a lap of freeride terrain, or a full day of piste skiing where you alternate between effort and standing still. The 3/4 length keeps fabric out of the boot, so there is no bunching under the liner. Where it stops is clear enough: there is no wind or water protection, so it is never worn as an outer layer, and with no insulation it needs a midlayer and a shell once the temperature drops. If your calves need covering down to the ankle, choose a full-length tight instead.
What is the Peak Performance Spirit AOP base layer made of and how do you wash it?
The shell knit is 88% polyester and 12% elastane. The polyester carries the moisture transport and the drying speed, the elastane gives the recovery that keeps a slim base layer from sagging after a few hours. Polyester base layers do hold odour more than merino over several days of wear, which is the trade-off for the fast drying. The all-over print needs a little discipline: wash the Peak Performance Spirit AOP 3/4 Short Johns inside out at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, skip the fabric softener, and never put an iron on the print. Tumble drying on low is allowed, and line drying in the shade protects the colours. Because the print is placed individually on each garment, the pattern on your pair will not line up exactly with the product photography.
What about sustainability?
