What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW

  • You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
  • Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
  • After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.

  • Returns are at your own risk and expense.
  • If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

Product information
  • HIPE® shell: 10,000 mm, all seams sealed
  • 420 g and packs into itself for the rucksack
  • Fixed hood fits climbing and bike helmets
  • No pit zips: venting via front pockets only
  • No insulation, needs a midlayer when cold
  • 2.5-layer backer wears faster than 3-layer

The Peak Performance Men Trail Hipe Shell Jacket is a 2.5-layer waterproof shell jacket for hiking, cycling and climbing in wind and rain. It is built around HIPE®, Peak Performance's own polyurethane membrane, with a 10,000 mm water column, 10,000 g/m²/24h breathability and sealed seams. The jacket carries no insulation and packs into itself, so it travels as a rain and wind layer rather than as a warm jacket.

Who is the Trail Hipe Shell Jacket for?

This Peak Performance shell jacket suits a hiker, cyclist or climber who wants one packable outer layer that keeps wind and rain out, with a fixed hood that fits over climbing and bike helmets. It is not a resort or freeride ski jacket: there is no powder skirt, no ski-specific pocket and no RECCO reflector. It is also not a standalone jacket for cold weather, because there is no insulation and no textile lining.

How waterproof and breathable is this HIPE® shell?

The HIPE® membrane gives 10,000 mm water column and 10,000 g/m²/24h moisture vapour transfer, with all seams sealed. Those are solid mid-range figures: the jacket handles a wet, windy day on the trail, but it is not a storm shell for prolonged heavy rain or several wet days in a row. There are no pit zips, so venting runs through the zippered front pockets plus the hem drawcord and the adjustable velcro cuffs. The face fabric has a water-repellent treatment and is made without intentionally added PFAS.

Which size should you choose?

The Trail Hipe Shell Jacket has a regular fit and comes in M, L, XL and 2XL. As a shell layer it is cut to go over a base layer or a thin midlayer; a bulky insulated midlayer underneath will fill out the chest and shoulders. The 2-way stretch fabric follows arm movement when you reach up on a climb or over handlebars. Use the Peak Performance size chart on this page to compare your chest and sleeve measurements before you order, and take the larger size if you plan to wear a fleece underneath all season.

How is the Peak Performance Trail Hipe Shell Jacket constructed?

This is a 2.5-layer build: a woven face fabric of 51% recycled polyester and 49% polyester, a 100% polyurethane HIPE® membrane bonded to it, and a polyurethane backer printed onto the inside instead of a separate liner fabric. That is what keeps the jacket at 420 g and lets it pack into itself. The trade-off is also structural: a printed backer is less hard-wearing and less pleasant against bare skin than the textile liner of a three-layer shell, so a base layer underneath is worth having. HIPE® is described as 2-way stretch, which is why the shell moves with you rather than pulling at the shoulders.

Is the Trail Hipe Shell Jacket good for hiking, cycling and climbing?

Hiking in wind and rain is what this Peak Performance shell jacket was built for, with cycling, climbing, travel and everyday rain cover close behind. The fixed hood is made to sit over climbing and bike helmets, the hand pockets close with zips and double as vents, and the hem drawcord and velcro cuffs seal the jacket down when the wind picks up. Where it stops: high-output efforts in warm weather, because without underarm ventilation the front pockets are the only airflow you have; and long spells of driving rain, where 10,000 mm and a 2.5-layer construction reach their limit. For skiing it lacks the features entirely - no powder skirt, no pass pocket.

What are the materials and how do you wash it?

The outer face is 51% recycled polyester and 49% polyester over a 100% polyurethane membrane and backer. Machine wash the jacket at 40 °C on a delicate cycle with similar colours, zippers closed, and skip the fabric softener - it clogs the membrane. Use a technical detergent to keep the water-repellent treatment working, then tumble dry on low or line dry in the shade. A cool iron is allowed, but not over the print. No dry cleaning and no professional wet cleaning.

What makes this shell a more responsible choice?

The Trail Hipe Shell Jacket is made without intentionally added PFAS, and just over half the face fabric - 51% - is recycled polyester. Keeping the water-repellent treatment alive with the right detergent is the main thing you can do to extend its working life.
