What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 50% merino wool knit, 50 g closed tube
- Flatlock seams stay smooth under a helmet strap
- 4% elastane stretch, quick-drying after a climb
- One size only (OSFA), no adjustment
- No membrane: no wind or rain protection
- 30 °C delicate wash, dry flat, no tumble drying
The Peak Performance Magic Neckgaiter is a lightweight unisex neck gaiter in a 50% merino wool, 46% polyester and 4% elastane knit, weighing 50 g in its one size. It is a closed tube that covers the whole neck and can be pulled up over the chin, built as a base-layer accessory to sit directly against the skin under a jacket collar or a helmet. What sets it apart is the merino-blend knit with flatlock seams: stretchy, quick-drying and smooth where a helmet strap or zip garage would otherwise rub.
Who is the Magic Neckgaiter for?
This Peak Performance neck gaiter suits skiers, tourers, winter runners and walkers who keep moving and want a thin neck cover that stays on all day without overheating. It is not the right choice if you stand still in severe cold or ride exposed lifts in a crosswind: a single-layer knit has no membrane and no windproof panel, so a thicker insulated or windproof neck warmer does that job better.
How warm is the Magic Neckgaiter?
At 50 g of single-layer merino-blend knit, the Peak Performance Magic Neckgaiter adds a thin layer of warmth rather than insulation. The 50% merino wool content holds warmth when damp and the knit wicks moisture and dries quickly, which is what matters on a climb where your neck sweats and then cools on the descent. For deep cold while static, layer it under a collar rather than relying on it alone.
Which size should you choose?
The Magic Neckgaiter comes in one size (OSFA) with no closure or adjustment, so there is nothing to pick. The 4% elastane lets the tube stretch over a helmet and settle back around the neck. Worn directly on the skin under a midlayer and jacket, it is thin enough to tuck under a collar without bulk.
How is the Peak Performance Magic Neckgaiter constructed?
The Peak Performance Magic Neckgaiter is a single-layer knit tube with no membrane, no coating and no insulation fill. Its performance comes from the yarn mix: 50% merino wool for warmth and odour control, 46% polyester for strength and fast drying, and 4% elastane so the tube stretches over a helmet and recovers its shape. The seams are flatlock, which lays the joins flat instead of leaving a ridge, so the gaiter does not chafe where a chin strap, a collar or a zip garage presses against it. Total weight is 50 g in the one available size.
Is the Magic Neckgaiter suitable for ski touring?
Yes, and that is where this Peak Performance neck gaiter is strongest. On a skin track your output is high and your neck gets damp; the stretch knit moves with you, wicks moisture away and dries quickly, so the gaiter does not turn cold and clammy at the transition. The same applies to winter running and hiking. On lift-served resort days it works well as a thin layer under a jacket collar or balaclava, but it stops at the wind: there is no windproof panel and no water-repellent finish, so in driving wind, sleet or wet snow you want a membrane-backed face cover over the top. There is also no RECCO reflector in this accessory, so it adds nothing to your searchability in the backcountry.
What is the Magic Neckgaiter made of and how do you wash it?
The shell knit of the Peak Performance Magic Neckgaiter is 50% merino wool, 46% polyester and 4% elastane, with no separate lining. Wool-blend knitwear asks for a little more care than a plain synthetic gaiter: machine wash at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, inside out and with similar colours, and skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres and reduces the wicking you bought it for. Do not bleach and do not tumble dry. Reshape the tube while it is still wet and dry it flat in the shade so the knit keeps its diameter. Do not iron, including over the print, and do not dry clean; professional wet cleaning under a normal process is fine. Treated this way, the elastane keeps its stretch and the merino stays soft against the skin.
What else goes with the Magic Neckgaiter?
The Magic Neckgaiter belongs to the Peak Performance Magic family, a line of base layers and light knit accessories. A matching Magic Hat is available in the same family if you want the neck and head to look the part together. The gaiter comes in Black and Med Grey Melange.
