What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

Product information
  • 3/4 leg ends above the boot cuff, no bunching
  • 48% merino / 48% polyester stretch knit
  • Flatlock seams, no ridge inside the boot
  • No wind or water protection: base layer only
  • Wool detergent only, no tumble dry, no iron
  • Lower leg stays bare in low-cut footwear

The Peak Performance Magic 3/4 Short Johns Wool-blend Baselayer Women is a next-to-skin base layer tight in a stretch knit of 48% merino wool, 48% polyester and 4% elastane. The 3/4 leg is cut to end above the cuff of a ski boot, so the fabric does not bunch or ride up inside the boot. Flatlock seams keep the inside of the leg flat where a boot and a ski pant press against the skin.

Who is this base layer for?

This is for a skier who wants a soft, stretchy wool-blend layer underneath ski pants and does not want full-length legs stuffed into a boot. It is a layer, not a garment on its own: the Magic 3/4 Short Johns offer no wind or water protection and always need a midlayer and a shell over them. If you want a base layer that covers the whole lower leg for use with low-cut footwear, choose a full-length tight instead.

What does the wool blend do?

Merino wool makes up 48% of the knit and sits directly against the skin, 48% polyester gives the fabric its structure, and 4% elastane lets it stretch and recover with every stride and turn. There is no membrane and no coating in the Peak Performance Magic 3/4 Short Johns, so air moves straight through the knit. The trade-off is clear: with half the blend in polyester, this carries less merino than a full-merino base layer.

Which size should you choose?

The cut is next to skin, so the Magic 3/4 Short Johns sit tight against the leg with no spare fabric to fold inside a boot. Sizes run from XS to XL. Use the Peak Performance women's bottom size chart and take your usual measurement-based size; if you are between two sizes and prefer a less compressive feel, take the larger one.

How is the Peak Performance Magic 3/4 Short Johns built?

The Peak Performance Magic 3/4 Short Johns Wool-blend Baselayer Women is a single-layer stretch knit with no lining: 48% merino wool, 48% polyester and 4% elastane. The elastane is what holds the leg against the body all day and brings the knit back to shape after it has been stretched over a knee or a boot liner. The seams are flatlock, which means the fabric edges are butted together and stitched flat rather than folded into a ridge, so there is no raised seam running down the inside of the leg. The waistband is elastic and carries Peak Performance branding. The style is offered in black.

Is it suitable for ski touring and freeride?

Resort skiing is the clearest use for the Magic 3/4 Short Johns: the shortened leg was cut around a ski boot, so it ends above the cuff instead of wrinkling under the liner. The same logic works for freeride days and for high alpine use under shell pants, and the stretch knit also serves as a general winter base layer. On ski tours it will do the job, but a warm wool-heavy knit is a deliberate choice for descending and for standing around rather than for long high-output ascents. One practical point: because the leg stops above the boot, a tall ski sock is needed to close the gap, and in low-cut footwear the lower leg stays bare.

How do you wash a wool-blend base layer?

Care for the Peak Performance Magic 3/4 Short Johns is more demanding than for a plain synthetic tight, and following it is what keeps the merino from felting. Wash at 30 degrees Celsius on a delicate cycle, inside out, with a wool detergent and with similar colours. Skip the fabric softener, which coats the fibres. Do not tumble dry, do not iron, do not bleach and do not dry clean; professional wet cleaning under a normal process is fine. Line dry in the shade and reshape the garment while it is still damp so the legs and waistband keep their length. If tumble-dry convenience and one standard detergent for everything is what your laundry routine needs, this is not the base layer for you.

What is stated on sustainability?

The Peak Performance Magic 3/4 Short Johns Wool-blend Baselayer Women is made without intentionally added PFAS. For a next-to-skin knit that matters more than it might on a shell, since there is no water-repellent finish involved in how this garment works in the first place: the fabric performs through the knit and the fibre blend itself.
