What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW

  • You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
  • Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
  • After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
  • Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
  • Returns are at your own risk and expense.
  • If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
  • If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

Product information
  • 68 g/m2 Alpha™ Direct: vents while you climb
  • Packable; works solo or as midlayer under a shell
  • PFC-free DWR, made without added PFAS
  • Water repellent only, not a waterproof shell
  • Open-knit fill: cooler when you stand still
  • No powder skirt, pit zips or pass pocket

The Peak Performance Freelight Polartec® Alpha™ Insulated Hood Jacket is a lightweight men's insulated jacket built for high-output mountain days: ski touring, uphill skiing and alpine climbing. Instead of a closed synthetic fill it carries an 85 gsm Polartec® Alpha™ Direct open-knit lining, so warm, damp air moves out while you are working instead of building up. It wears standalone in dry weather and as the insulation layer under a hardshell.

Who is this jacket for?

The Freelight Polartec® Alpha™ Insulated Hood Jacket suits the skier or mountain user who overheats in conventional synthetic insulation and wants one packable jacket for both uphill and midlayer duty. It is not a resort jacket: there is no powder skirt, no pit zips, no ski-pass pocket and no RECCO® reflector. It is also not the jacket for standing still in deep cold, or for sustained rain and wet snow.

How warm and how breathable is the Freelight Alpha jacket?

Insulation is 68 g/m2 of Polartec® Alpha™ Direct across the body, an open-knit fleece that is air-permeable by design. That is warmth that keeps pace with a climb rather than warmth that holds still: the moment you stop moving it feels cooler than a closed-face synthetic jacket of the same weight. The 43 gsm 20D shell panel is windproof and repels light rain, but the construction is partially wind blocked, so wind protection is not uniform across the whole jacket.

Which size should you choose?

Peak Performance cuts the Freelight Polartec® Alpha™ Insulated Hood Jacket in a regular fit, with raglan sleeves and room for a base layer or a thin fleece underneath, and enough space to slip it under a shell. Check the size chart on this page against your chest measurement before you order. Sizes run S to 2XL, but OFFWHITE and PONDEROSA PINE are only offered in M, L and XL.

How is the Peak Performance Freelight Alpha jacket constructed?

The Peak Performance Freelight Polartec® Alpha™ Insulated Hood Jacket pairs two different shell fabrics with one active insulation. Shell 1 is a 43 gsm 20D plain weave in 100% polyamide, windproof and water-repellent against light rain. Shell 2 is a heavier 102 gsm 90D stretch poplin in 94% polyamide and 6% elastane with a dry touch, which adds give where the jacket needs to move with you. Behind them sits the 85 gsm Polartec® Alpha™ Direct lining, 78% recycled polyester and 22% polyester, knitted open so air passes through the insulation rather than being trapped in it. A PFC-free durable water repellent treatment beads light moisture on the face fabric. There is no membrane and no taped seams, so this is a breathable insulator, not a waterproof shell.

Is the Freelight Alpha jacket suitable for ski touring?

Ski touring and uphill skiing are exactly what this jacket is aimed at. With 68 g/m2 of air-permeable body insulation you can keep it on through a skin track without soaking it, then pull a shell over the top for the descent — it packs down when you do not need it. It also works for alpine climbing, mountaineering and cool-weather hiking as a breathable midlayer. Where it stops: storm days. Once rain or wet snow sets in, the Freelight Polartec® Alpha™ Insulated Hood Jacket needs a waterproof layer over it, and it should not be your only protective layer in the backcountry. For lift-served days spent mostly standing or riding, a closed synthetic or down jacket holds heat better.

What is the Freelight jacket made of and how do you wash it?

Lining: 78% recycled polyester and 22% polyester. Shell 1: 100% polyamide. Shell 2: 94% polyamide with 6% elastane. Pockets: 96% polyamide with 4% elastane. Polyamide shells with a fine 20D weave are light and wind-resistant, so handle them with the same care you would give a shell fabric. Wash the jacket cold at 30°C with a technical detergent to keep the water repellent treatment working, skip fabric softener, close the zippers first and wash with similar colours. Tumble dry low or line drip dry in the shade; do not iron, do not bleach and do not dry clean.

What makes the Freelight jacket more responsible?

The Freelight Polartec® Alpha™ Insulated Hood Jacket is made without intentionally added PFAS and uses a PFC-free durable water repellent treatment. The Polartec® Alpha™ lining is 78% recycled polyester.
