What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.
Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 200D 2-layer waterproof panel on the lower leg
- Gusseted hem adjusts for walk mode and ski mode
- Integrated snow gaiters, bootcut over big boots
- Main fabric is not waterproof: dry days only
- No insulation, warmth comes from your base layer
- Tight cut, no room for a thick base layer under
The Norrøna lyngen equaliser stretch Tights are women's ski touring tights: a tight, next-to-skin stretch garment that carries ski-pant details instead of base-layer simplicity. The lower leg is reinforced with a 200D two-layer waterproof fabric, cut bootcut, adjustable with a gusset for walk mode and ski mode, and fitted with integrated stretch snow gaiters. That combination is what separates these tights from both a running tight and a shell pant.
Who are these touring tights for?
They suit a woman who skins uphill at a high output and wants full freedom of movement, with a high drawcord waist, large stretch thigh pockets and a small coin pocket at the waist. The Norrøna lyngen equaliser stretch Tights are also intended for mountaineering, climbing and trekking in larger boots. They are not the right choice for low-output, lift-served resort skiing in the cold, and not for rain, wet snow or sustained precipitation.
How much protection and warmth do they give?
The main fabric of the lyngen equaliser stretch Tights is a brushed, quick-drying recycled nylon and elastane blend. It stretches, moves moisture and dries fast, but it is not waterproof and there is no membrane and no insulation. The only waterproof element is the 200D two-layer reinforcement on the lower leg, where snow, boots and ski edges do the damage. Warmth therefore comes from your own output and your base layer, which is why these tights are positioned for dry spring-like days and dry cold days with high-intensity activity.
Which size should you choose?
The fit is tight and next to the skin, with articulated knees and a bootcut lower leg shaped to sit over larger boots. Wear them directly against the skin: there is little room for a thick midlayer or a bulky long base layer underneath. The Norrøna lyngen equaliser stretch Tights are available in S, M and L. Check your waist and hip measurements against the size chart on this page before ordering.
How are the Norrøna lyngen equaliser stretch Tights constructed?
These women's touring tights are built from one brushed, quick-drying recycled nylon and elastane main fabric, worn directly against the skin with no lining. The stretch comes from the elastane content and from the pattern: articulated knees follow the leg through a long skinning stride, and a high waist with a drawcord keeps the waistband in place under a harness or a pack hip belt. Where the garment takes the most abuse, the construction changes: the lower leg is reinforced with a 200D two-layer waterproof fabric, and an adjustable gusset lets you open the hem for ski mode or close it down for walk mode. Integrated stretch snow gaiters sit inside that bootcut lower leg.
Are the lyngen equaliser stretch Tights suitable for ski touring?
Ski touring is what the Norrøna lyngen equaliser stretch Tights are made for. On a dry spring morning or a dry cold day they let you climb without the fabric fighting your stride, with two large stretch thigh pockets for the things you need while moving and a coin pocket at the waist for the small things. The same build works for mountaineering, climbing and trekking in boots, because the bootcut hem clears a stiff boot cuff. Where they stop is weather and standing still: there is no insulation, and apart from the reinforced lower leg the fabric is not waterproof, so rain, wet snow and long periods of sitting in or digging through wet snow call for a shell pant over the top. The same applies to a cold day of lift-served resort skiing, where output is low and the thin stretch fabric has little to give.
Which materials are used and how do you look after them?
The main fabric of the lyngen equaliser stretch Tights is a brushed recycled nylon and elastane blend, chosen for stretch, moisture transport and fast drying rather than for weather protection. The 200D two-layer waterproof panel on the lower leg adds a tougher surface exactly where ski edges, crampons and boot buckles make contact, which is the usual failure point on a stretch touring garment. Wash them with other technical stretch garments, keep them away from fabric softener so the fabric keeps moving moisture, and follow the care label sewn into the garment.
What makes these tights a more sustainable choice?
The main fabric of the Norrøna lyngen equaliser stretch Tights is a recycled nylon and elastane blend, so the dominant material in the garment is made from recycled nylon rather than virgin fibre. Norrøna also builds around repair rather than replacement, which is why the high-wear lower leg carries a separate reinforcement panel instead of the same thin stretch fabric as the rest of the leg.
