What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

GOOD TO KNOW
- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
- Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
- If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 3-layer HELLY TECH® Professional, fully seam sealed
- Helmet-compatible hood adjusts in two directions
- Fits with backpack and harness, RECCO® built in
- No insulation: needs a warm midlayer on cold days
- Not an all-in-one insulated piste jacket
The Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 is a men's 3-layer hardshell jacket for backcountry skiing, hiking and mountaineering. It pairs a waterproof, breathable and windproof HELLY TECH® Professional construction and fully sealed seams with a helmet-compatible hood, a backpack- and harness-compatible cut and a built-in RECCO® rescue transponder.
Who is the Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 for?
The Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 is for skiers and mountaineers who climb under their own power and build warmth with layers under a single shell. Underarm ventilation zippers release heat on the ascent, articulated sleeves keep your arms free, and the cut is designed to work with a backpack and a climbing harness. It is not built for skiers who want an all-in-one insulated piste jacket. Worn on its own on a cold lift-served day, this uninsulated hardshell jacket will feel cold.
How waterproof and windproof is the Odin 9 Worlds hardshell jacket?
The Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 uses HELLY TECH® Professional, a waterproof, breathable and windproof membrane system, in a 3-layer construction with a 100% polyamide shell. Every seam is sealed, so water cannot find its way in through the stitching. The helmet-compatible hood adjusts both vertically and horizontally, and a soft fleece chin guard sits against your face when the jacket is closed. Warmth is not part of this shell: it comes entirely from the layers you wear underneath.
Which size of the Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 should I choose?
The Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 is an outer layer, worn over a base layer and a midlayer. If you plan to wear a thick insulated midlayer under it, measure your chest over that layer and compare the result with the Helly Hansen men's jacket size chart on this product page. The hood fits over a ski or climbing helmet, and the adjustable hem with tail drop keeps your lower back covered when you bend forward or carry a pack.
How does the HELLY TECH® Professional 3-layer construction work?
In the Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0, the HELLY TECH® Professional membrane is part of a 3-layer construction: the membrane is laminated between the outer fabric and an inner layer, so the hardshell jacket works as one single fabric. The membrane blocks wind, rain and snow from outside and lets water vapour from your body pass outward. Because the jacket carries no insulation, it stays a pure weather barrier that you combine with your own base and mid layers. When you work hard and the membrane alone cannot keep up, the underarm ventilation zippers open the jacket mechanically and release heat directly.
Is the Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 suitable for backcountry skiing and mountaineering?
Helly Hansen lists the Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 for backcountry skiing, hiking and mountaineering. On the skin track you open the underarm zippers and keep an insulating layer in your pack. At the top you close the vents, pull the hood over your helmet, tighten it with the vertical and horizontal adjustment and add warmth underneath for the descent. The design is made to work with a backpack and a climbing harness, and articulated sleeves give you room to reach, pole and climb. The RECCO® transponder makes you detectable for rescue teams equipped with RECCO® detectors. The hardshell jacket stops being the right tool on cold resort days where you mostly ride lifts and stand still: without a warm midlayer underneath, it offers wind and weather protection but no insulation.
What is the Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 made of and how do I care for it?
The shell of the Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 is 100% polyamide. The chest and hand pockets close with YKK® zippers, the inside of the collar is lined with brushed tricot and the chin guard is soft fleece. Before washing, close all zippers and hook-and-loop fasteners, turn the jacket inside out and wash it with similar colours. Use a washing agent made for technical garments and do not use fabric softener, so the membrane construction is treated as the technical fabric it is.
What makes the Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 more responsible?
The main material of the Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket 3.0 is bluesign®. Because this hardshell jacket is an uninsulated shell, you can use it across many conditions by changing only the layers underneath, rather than owning a separate jacket for each temperature.
