What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW

  • You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
  • Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
  • After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
  • Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
  • Returns are at your own risk and expense.
  • If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
  • If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

Product information
  • 2-layer: Merino outside, LIFA® wicking inside
  • Flat lock seams and non-itch fabric
  • RWS-certified wool (IDFL, TE-99972454)
  • No wind or water protection: needs an outer trouser
  • 3/4 length: lower leg and ankle stay uncovered
  • Wool detergent only, no softener, do not wring

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants are men's midweight base layer pants made from a 2-layer fabric. A Merino wool exterior sits over a LIFA® wicking interior that lies against the skin. They are built as the first layer under ski or mountain trousers for resort skiing, off-piste, ski touring and mountaineering, with flat lock seams, an elastic waist and non-itch fabric.

Who are the Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants for?

These 3/4 base layer pants suit skiers and mountaineers who want Merino wool on the outside and a wicking LIFA® layer next to the skin. Wear them under shell or insulated ski trousers on the piste, off-piste or on a tour. They are not outer trousers. There is no membrane and no wind or water protection. If you want coverage down to the ankle, choose a full-length base layer instead, because the 3/4 length leaves the lower leg uncovered.

How warm are the LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants?

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants are a midweight base layer and weigh 320 g. The warmth comes from the 2-layer knit. LIFA® Stay Warm Technology on the inside wicks moisture away from the skin, and the Merino wool exterior adds the breathable warmth of wool. As a base layer, they do not replace insulated trousers. In very cold conditions with little movement, wear them under an insulated outer layer.

Which size of the LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants should I choose?

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants have a regular fit. They are fitted for mobility without bulk, but they are not a slim or compression cut. Compare your measurements with the Helly Hansen men's pants size chart on this product page before you order. The pants have an elastic waist. Wear them as your first layer, with the LIFA® side against the skin and your ski or mountain trousers on top.

How is the fabric of the LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants constructed?

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants use a 2-layer knit rather than a single-fibre fabric. The interior layer is 100% LIFA®, Helly Hansen's wicking fibre. It sits against the skin and moves moisture outward. The exterior layer is 100% Merino wool. Helly Hansen calls this combination LIFA® Stay Warm Technology. The fabric is non-itch, and flat lock seams add comfort and durability. There is no membrane, so these base layer pants are built to sit under an outer trouser, not to replace one.

Are the LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants suitable for ski touring?

Yes, as a base layer. Helly Hansen lists the LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants for backcountry skiing. Under touring trousers, the LIFA® interior wicks moisture away from the skin while the Merino wool exterior stays breathable. The same base layer pants are listed for resort skiing and off-piste, where they go under shell or insulated ski trousers. They also work for mountaineering and general winter activities. The regular fit is designed for mobility without bulk under your outer layer.

Where do the LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants reach their limits?

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants provide no wind or water protection. Always combine them with an outer trouser. The 3/4 length does not cover the lower leg or ankle. If you want a base layer that runs into your socks, a full-length model is the better choice. As a midweight base layer, they are not a substitute for insulated trousers in very cold, static conditions. On days with long waits in deep cold, add an insulated outer layer.

What are the LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants made of?

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants combine a 100% Merino wool exterior layer with a 100% LIFA® interior layer. Across both layers, the fabric composition is 57% Merino wool and 43% polypropylene. That makes this a Merino blend base layer, not a garment made entirely of Merino wool.

How do you wash the LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants?

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants need wool care. Turn them inside out before washing and use a wool detergent. Do not use fabric softener, and do not wring the pants after washing. If you prefer laundry that can go in with everything else on a standard programme, these base layer pants ask for more attention than a synthetic base layer.

Is the wool in the LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants responsibly sourced?

The wool in the Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Midweight 3/4 Pants is Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) wool. It is certified by IDFL under certificate number TE-99972454.
