What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

Is your purchase not quite what you expected or is the size incorrect? No problem, you can easily return your order to us. You may try on and view an item as you would in a shop, but there are some rules.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
  • Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
  • After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
  • Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
  • Returns are at your own risk and expense.
  • If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
  • If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

5. Refund

You will receive confirmation by e-mail when your return has been received and processed.

This is usually within a few days after your order has been delivered to us. The money will then be refunded to the account you paid with within a week after confirmation (usually longer for credit card payments). If you have chosen to pay afterwards, this will be adjusted on your Klarna invoice.

Please note! If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.

Product information
  • LIFA® Merino: 57% merino wool, 43% polypropylene
  • 2-layer fabric that retains heat and keeps you dry
  • Flatlock seams for extra comfort and durability
  • Fabric layer only, no wind or weather barrier
  • One size only, no option for smaller or larger heads
  • Needs wool detergent, no softener, no wringing

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Balaclava is a unisex balaclava made from LIFA® Merino, a 2-layer fabric of 57% merino wool and 43% polypropylene. It is built for colder-climate winter activity such as ski touring, backcountry skiing, off-piste skiing and alpine racing, where moisture control and breathability matter as much as heat retention. Flatlock seams and a single size keep it simple.

Who is the Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Balaclava for?

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Balaclava suits skiers and mountaineers who move hard in the cold: skinning uphill, racing gates, hiking or riding a mountain bike in winter. It is not the right choice if you want a windproof or waterproof face mask. It is a merino/polypropylene fabric layer, not a wind or weather barrier on its own. It is also not suitable if you are sensitive to wool or avoid animal-derived products, because it contains 57% merino wool and the label states non-textile parts of animal origin.

How does the LIFA® Merino Balaclava handle warmth and moisture?

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Balaclava combines merino wool and polypropylene in two layers. Helly Hansen describes the fabric as lightweight, with moisture control and breathability, and designed to retain heat while keeping you dry. The balaclava contains no insulation. That makes it a fabric layer for active days in the cold, not a padded face covering for long periods of standing still.

Which size of the LIFA® Merino Balaclava should I choose?

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Balaclava comes in one size only, listed as STD or OSFA, in a unisex design. There are no smaller or larger versions. If you need a specific head or face size, a one-size balaclava like this one is not the right pick.

How is the Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Balaclava constructed?

The Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Balaclava is made from LIFA® Merino fabric in a 2-layer construction. The fabric blends 57% merino wool with 43% polypropylene, a combination Helly Hansen describes as lightweight and soft, with moisture control and breathability. The seams are flatlock seams, which Helly Hansen uses for extra comfort and durability. The balaclava has no insulation fill and makes no windproof or waterproof claim: the fabric itself does the work of retaining heat and managing moisture.

Is the Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Balaclava suitable for ski touring?

Yes. Ski touring and backcountry skiing are among the uses Helly Hansen lists for the LIFA® Merino Balaclava. On a climb you build up heat and moisture, and a breathable merino/polypropylene fabric around your face and neck is aimed at exactly that situation. Where it stops is weather protection. On an exposed ridge in strong wind or in wet snow, the Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Balaclava does not act as a wind or weather barrier on its own, so it does not replace a windproof or waterproof layer.

Which other activities is the LIFA® Merino Balaclava made for?

Helly Hansen lists the LIFA® Merino Balaclava for off-piste skiing, alpine racing, mountaineering, hiking, mountain biking and general winter activities in colder climates. The common thread is movement: these are activities where you generate heat and want a balaclava that handles moisture. For mountaineering in exposed, high-altitude conditions, the Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Balaclava works as a fabric layer only and offers no dedicated protection against wind or precipitation.

What is the LIFA® Merino Balaclava made of, and how do you care for it?

The shell of the Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Balaclava is 57% merino wool and 43% polypropylene, and the label states that it contains non-textile parts of animal origin. Because of the wool content, the balaclava needs wool-specific care. Wash it inside out with wool detergent and with similar colours. Do not use fabric softener and do not wring it. If you prefer to wash everything with ordinary detergent and softener, this merino balaclava is not a low-maintenance choice.
