What is the 3-layer system? 

When you hit the slopes on a cold, winter day, you want to stay warm, dry and comfortable. The solution? The 3-layer system. Consisting of a base layer (thermal layer), a midlayer and an outer layer (ski jacket), this system ensures that your body can cope well with the cold and changing conditions while skiing. Each of these layers has a specific function and together they form a perfect protective shield against the elements. In this blog, we explain how the 3-layer system works and how to choose the right clothing for an optimal skiing experience.

1. Base Layer (Thermal layer) - For heat and moisture management

The base layer, also called the thermal layer, is the layer that sits directly on your skin and allows sweat to be wicked away. Unlike a normal shirt, which retains moisture and can cause a wet and cold feeling, the base layer wicks away moisture. This keeps your body dry while skiing. This prevents you from cooling down and experiencing discomfort, helping to maintain your body temperature.

2. Midlayer – Insulation and heat

The midlayer is the insulating layer that retains the heat generated by your body. This layer needs to breathe well, allowing moisture from the base layer to pass through and be dissipated, while retaining the heat generated by your body.

Material:
Common midlayer materials are fleece, down or synthetic insulation materials such as Primaloft.

Why essential.
The midlayer creates a buffer of air around your body that keeps you warm. In extreme cold, adding an extra layer of insulation can make the difference between a pleasant day on the slopes and a cold, unpleasant experience.

3. Outer layer (Ski jacket) - Protection against the elements

The outer layer is your protective layer against wind, snow and rain. The ski jacket should be waterproof and windproof, but at the same time breathable so that moisture can escape from inside to outside. If the outer layer does not breathe well, moisture from the underlying layers cannot escape, resulting in a clammy and cold feeling.

Material choice:
Choose materials such as Gore-Tex or other technical membranes that are both waterproof and breathable. In milder conditions, a shell jacket without insulation can suffice if you wear the right base and midlayers.
