What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.
Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW
- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
- Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
- If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- Six dart construction shapes the crown, no bulk
- Packs flat into a jacket pocket as a spare hat
- Wear it folded or unfolded, one size, unisex
- Single-layer knit: no wind barrier for deep cold
- Hand wash cold and dry flat only, no machine wash
- Unfolded for full ear cover, word logo is hidden
The Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque is a unisex knit beanie in one size, made for resort days, lift rides, the walk to the car and everyday wear in town. Six dart construction shapes the crown so the knit curves over the head instead of bunching into a point, and the toque packs down small enough to live permanently in a jacket pocket. Both the Arc'teryx Bird logo and the word logo are carried on the hat.
Who is the Bird Word Toque for?
This is the hat for a skier or mountain user who wants one simple, packable beanie that covers resort skiing, approaches, apres and town, and who is happy to add a hood when the weather turns. It is not the right choice if you need a windproof or heavily insulated hat for severe cold, exposed high-alpine days or standing around in driving snow. It is also not the hat to buy if you want a guaranteed head circumference, because the Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque is sold in one size only.
How warm is the Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque?
Warmth comes from the knit itself. The Bird Word Toque is a single-layer knit beanie with no membrane, no wind-blocking barrier and no insulation fill, so it handles everyday cold and lift queues around freezing rather than wind chill on an exposed ridge. Worn unfolded it drops lower for full ear coverage; worn folded it sits higher with a double band over the ears. Note that with the toque unfolded, the word logo is no longer visible.
Which size should you choose?
There is one choice to make: the Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque comes in one size fits all (OSFA). The cut is relaxed, with more volume through the crown than the lower-profile Bird Head Toque, so it wears slightly slouched rather than tight to the skull. That extra crown volume also means it is better suited to wearing before and after skiing than underneath a close-fitting ski or climbing helmet.
What does six dart construction do on this toque?
The Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque is built with six darts rather than as a single straight tube of knit. Each dart takes out a wedge of fabric towards the crown, so the panels pull together over the top of the head and the hat follows the skull instead of gathering into a peak. The result is an even fit around the head with the spare volume sitting high and soft. Construction is single layer throughout: there is no laminated film, no wind barrier and no separate insulation layer, which is exactly why the toque compresses to almost nothing.
Is the Bird Word Toque suitable for ski touring and freeride days?
It works well as the hat you ski in and as the spare you carry. On resort days the Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque handles chairlifts, cold mornings and the bar afterwards. On a tour it packs flat into a hip-belt pocket or the lid of a pack, so you can strip down to a cap on the climb and still have a dry knit hat for the transition. Where it stops is clear: strong wind, severe cold and exposed high-alpine terrain ask for a membrane or an insulated hood, and this is a knit hat with neither. It has no waterproof or water-repellent treatment, so in wet snow or rain treat it as a layer under a hood rather than as your outer head protection.
How do you wash and care for the Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque?
Care is hands-on. Hand wash the toque in cold water, wash dark colours separately, and dry it flat. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, iron, bleach, dry clean, wring or use fabric softener. It is worth knowing that customer feedback on this model regularly mentions early pilling of the knit surface, and some owners report loose threads around the Bird logo after washing. That is user experience rather than a manufacturer statement, but it is a consistent enough theme to factor in if you want a hat that still looks new after a full season of helmet and hood friction. Gentle hand washing and flat drying are the best defence.
What are the sustainability credentials?
The Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque is PFAS compliant, meaning it is made without per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and it carries Fair Trade Certified status covering the conditions under which it is made. Both points are part of Arc'teryx's wider programme of reducing chemistry of concern and improving factory standards across its accessories range.
