What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.
Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW
- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
- Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
- If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 65 g reversible knit: logo side or solid side
- 48% wool, 47% recycled polyester, RWS certified
- Thin enough to wear under a ski helmet
- Not waterproof and not windproof
- One size only (OSFA), close fitting cut
- Wool wash, dry flat, no tumble dry or iron
The Arc'teryx Word Head Toque is a reversible wool-blend knit beanie for winter mountain sports, light enough at 65 grams to sit under a ski or snowboard helmet. One side shows the Arc'teryx word logo graphic, the reverse is solid colour, so a single hat covers two looks. It is an unlined single-layer knit, built for warmth and breathability rather than weather protection.
Who is the Word Head Toque for?
This beanie suits skiers and snowboarders who want a thin, close-fitting hat that disappears under a helmet on the hill and still reads as street wear in the lift queue. Arc'teryx also lists the Word Head Toque for alpine climbing, ski touring, freeride and resort days, as well as everyday winter wear. It is not the hat for rain, wet snow or sustained precipitation without a hood over it, and not for severe cold or exposed wind as your only layer.
How warm is the Arc'teryx Word Head Toque?
Warmth comes from the knit itself: a blend of 48% wool, 47% recycled polyester, 4% nylon and 1% elastane, weighing 65 grams in total. Arc'teryx describes it as lightly insulated, and that is the honest read, because there is no insulation fill, no membrane and no windproof layer. The wool content keeps working when the knit is damp with sweat, and the single layer lets heat and moisture escape under a helmet.
Which size should you choose?
The Word Head Toque is made in one size only (OSFA), so there is nothing to pick. Six darts shape the crown into a close fitting cut that sits snug against the head and stays slim under a helmet shell, and the elastane in the blend gives the knit some stretch. Consult the hat sizing chart on this page if your head is notably small or large, since the cut is close and offers no adjustment.
How is the Arc'teryx Word Head Toque constructed?
Six dart construction is the core of the Arc'teryx Word Head Toque. Instead of a straight tube, the knit is shaped by six tapered darts that pull the crown into a rounded dome, so the hat follows the head rather than bunching at the top. The fabric is a wool and recycled polyester blend knit with nylon and elastane added, worked as one layer and fully reversible: the logo graphic face and the solid face are both finished sides, with no lining between them. At 65 grams there is no bulk to compress, which is what makes it workable under a hard helmet shell. Black Sapphire pairs a dark blue-charcoal with aqua, Arctic Silk pairs an amber larch yellow with a pale off-white, and Orca is black. There is no membrane and no water repellent finish.
Is the Word Head Toque suitable for skiing and ski touring?
On resort days the Arc'teryx Word Head Toque works as the layer between your head and the helmet, and as the hat you keep on at the bottom station. For ski touring and freeride the thin knit helps on the climb, where a thick hat overheats quickly, and the wool blend keeps insulating once it is damp. For alpine climbing it covers approach walks and cold belays. Where it stops is weather: no waterproofing and no wind membrane, so in driving snow, rain or sustained wind it needs a hooded GORE-TEX shell over it, which is what Arc'teryx support advises as well. As a standalone hat in deep cold or on an exposed ridge it is underpowered.
What are the materials and how do you care for the Word Head Toque?
The main fabric is 48% wool, 47% recycled polyester, 4% nylon and 1% elastane. The wool brings warmth and next-to-skin comfort, the recycled polyester adds structure, the nylon adds abrasion resistance and the elastane pulls the knit back into shape after stretching. Care is wool care, not sportswear care: hand wash cold or machine wash on a low setting with a wool detergent, then dry flat. Keep it away from bleach, fabric softener, the iron, the dry cleaner and the tumble dryer, and do not wring it out. Wash the dark colourways such as Orca and Black Sapphire separately.
What makes the Word Head Toque more responsible?
The wool in the Arc'teryx Word Head Toque is 100% Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) certified, audited by IDFL under number TE-99950273, and 47% of the main fabric is recycled polyester. The style is PFAS compliant and carries Fair Trade Certified status. Fabric and dyeing take place in China, sewing in Indonesia. Because roughly half the blend is synthetic, washing can release plastic microfibres into the environment, so wash it rarely and gently.
