What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Is your purchase not quite what you expected or is the size incorrect? No problem, you can easily return your order to us. You may try on and view an item as you would in a shop, but there are some rules.
GOOD TO KNOW
- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
- Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
- If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 3-layer GORE-TEX: waterproof and windproof
- RECCO reflector built into the hood brim
- Powder skirt plus helmet-compatible StormHood
- No insulation: needs a midlayer when it is cold
- No chest pocket, no goggle wipe
- Only offered in S, M and L
The Arc'teryx Sentinel Jacket is an uninsulated three-layer GORE-TEX shell jacket for women, built for freeride and deep-snow skiing in rough terrain. It is a pure outer layer: waterproof, windproof, with an integrated powder skirt, a helmet-compatible StormHood and a RECCO reflector in the hood brim. All of its warmth comes from the layers you choose underneath, which is what keeps it usable from storm days in January to warm spring laps.
Who is the Arc'teryx Sentinel Jacket for?
This is the jacket for a skier who rides lift-accessed powder and backcountry lines in bad weather and wants one durable hardshell she can build a layering system under, instead of a fixed-warmth insulated piste jacket. It is less suited to cold, static days if you do not bring a proper midlayer, to weight-counting ski touring or skimo where a lighter minimal shell is the better tool, and to technical rock or ice climbing, where the powder skirt and resort-oriented cut interfere with a harness.
How weatherproof is the Sentinel Jacket?
The Arc'teryx Sentinel Jacket uses a three-layer GORE-TEX construction, so the waterproof, windproof membrane is bonded between the face fabric and a soft backer in one laminate. There is no separate lining to soak up moisture and no insulation to trap heat you do not want. Pit zips with WaterTight zippers dump heat on a hard bootpack or a warm afternoon, the hem cinch and the adjustable Velcro cuffs seal out spindrift, and the StormHood fits over a ski helmet.
Which size should you choose?
The Arc'teryx Sentinel Jacket has a Regular fit with a women's-specific pattern and articulation: cut comfortably through chest, waist, hip and thigh, with deliberate room for a fleece or insulated midlayer. It is offered in S, M and L. Measure your chest and hips and compare them with the Arc'teryx women's tops size chart on this page; if you plan to run a thick insulated midlayer underneath and your chest measurement sits at the top of a size, take the larger one.
How is the Arc'teryx Sentinel Jacket built?
The Arc'teryx Sentinel Jacket is a three-layer hardshell. Face fabric, GORE-TEX membrane and backer are laminated into a single textile, which is why the jacket keeps its shape when it is soaked, does not flap against your midlayer and handles the abrasion of a pack, a chairlift and a tree-run crash. Because there is no insulation and no hanging liner, the jacket does one job: it keeps water and wind out while letting moisture vapour move away from your body. You control the temperature with what you put underneath.
Is the Sentinel Jacket a freeride jacket or a resort jacket?
Both, in that order. Arc'teryx builds the Sentinel Jacket for freeride and deep-snow skiing, and the feature set shows it: an integrated powder skirt for face shots and deep landings, a helmet-compatible StormHood, a RECCO reflector in the hood brim to make you findable for equipped rescue teams, two hand pockets and a sleeve pocket for a lift pass. For resort and off-piste days it works unchanged. For lift-accessed backcountry and the occasional tour it works as long as you accept the trade: this is a durable, feature-rich shell, not a stripped touring jacket, so the powder skirt and the snowsport hardware add bulk a skimo shell leaves out. For a full day of climbing in a harness, choose a dedicated alpine shell.
How do you look after a three-layer GORE-TEX jacket?
Washing is part of maintaining performance, not a risk to it. Close every zip and the powder skirt, then machine wash the Arc'teryx Sentinel Jacket on medium, on its own, with no fabric softener and no bleach. Give it a double rinse so no detergent residue stays in the laminate, take it out of the machine as soon as the cycle ends rather than leaving it wet, and tumble dry on medium heat. The heat is what reactivates the water-repellent finish on the face fabric, so a wash and dry cycle is the usual fix when water stops beading and starts sitting on the surface. Do not iron and do not dry clean.
What this generation of the Sentinel Jacket does not have
Worth knowing before you order: this generation of the Arc'teryx Sentinel Jacket has no chest pocket and no integrated goggle wipe. Pocketing is two hand pockets plus a sleeve pocket, and it is offered here in S, M and L only.
