What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

GOOD TO KNOW
- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
- Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- Air-permeable softshell with four-way stretch
- Four zippered pockets, two reachable under a pack
- Articulated arms and shoulders for overhead reach
- DWR finish only: soaks through in lasting rain
- No hood, no powder skirt, no ski pass pocket
- Uninsulated and unlined; warmth is all layering
The Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Jacket is an uninsulated men's softshell jacket for warm-weather hiking, rock climbing and dry, windy days in the mountains. Its air-permeable woven softshell fabric with four-way stretch lets air pass through the garment instead of sealing it in, which is what separates it from a membrane shell. A DWR (durable water repellent) finish on the face fabric sheds light moisture.
Who is the Gamma Lightweight Jacket for?
Choose the Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Jacket if you want one light, very breathable stretch layer for warm approaches, cragging and windy ridgelines, and you already own a waterproof hardshell for bad weather. It is not a ski jacket: there is no powder skirt, no ski pass pocket and no hood, so lift-served and off-piste days ask for a different garment. It is also not a cold-weather jacket on its own, because it is uninsulated and unlined.
How much weather protection does this softshell give?
Protection in the Gamma Lightweight Jacket comes from the tightly woven face fabric and its DWR finish, not from a membrane. That means water beads up and rolls off in a passing shower, and the fabric slows wind down rather than blocking it completely. In sustained rain or wet snow, water will eventually get through. The trade for that is breathability: because the weave is air-permeable, warm, damp air escapes continuously while you climb or hike, without opening a single zip. Reproof the face fabric once water stops beading to keep the finish working.
Which size should you choose?
The Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Jacket has a regular cut through chest, waist and hip and fits true to size, so order the size you normally wear. It is built as a mid or outer layer with room for a base layer or a thin, close-fitting insulated layer underneath, but it is not cut to go over a thick midlayer. Several wearers report that the sleeves are generous for the body size, so if you have shorter arms, compare the sleeve-length column of the men's tops size chart before ordering. This style is offered in M, L and XL.
How is the Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Jacket constructed?
The Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Jacket is a single-layer woven softshell with four-way stretch and no membrane and no lining, which is why it moves and breathes the way it does. Articulated patterning through the arms and shoulders keeps the hem and cuffs in place when you reach overhead for a hold or a scramble move, instead of riding up the torso. A full-length front zip, an adjustable hem draw cord and stretch binding at the cuffs let you seal out drafts or dump heat quickly. The collar sits on its own: this is the version without a hood, and the hooded Gamma is a separate model.
Is the Gamma Lightweight Jacket suitable for climbing and hiking?
Climbing and hiking are exactly what this softshell was built for. The stretch fabric follows high steps and long reaches on rock and boulder problems, and the air-permeable weave keeps sweat from building up on steep, warm approaches. Two zippered chest pockets stay reachable under a harness or a pack hipbelt, and two zippered hand pockets take gloves or a phone. For spring and autumn, the Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Jacket also works as a stretchy layer under a waterproof shell, and it is light and plain enough for travel and everyday wear. Where it stops is clear: exposed storm weather, winter alpine routes and resort skiing need a waterproof hardshell with a hood, not a water-repellent softshell.
How do you look after the Gamma Lightweight Jacket?
Care is straightforward, and keeping the face fabric clean is what keeps the DWR finish doing its job. Machine wash the Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Jacket on a low temperature with a double rinse, and wash dark colours separately so loose dye does not transfer. Skip fabric softener and bleach: softener coats the fibres and flattens the water-repellent finish, and bleach attacks the fabric itself. Tumble dry on low, which also helps reactivate the DWR, and iron on low if the weave needs smoothing. Do not dry clean. Once water stops beading on the surface and starts soaking in instead, it is time to reproof rather than replace.
What is the Gamma line for?
Gamma is the Arc'teryx softshell family, and the Gamma Lightweight Jacket is its thinnest, most air-permeable expression. Where the Beta and Alpha families use GORE-TEX to keep weather out, Gamma accepts a little weather in exchange for stretch, quiet fabric and continuous airflow. That makes this jacket a specialist for movement-heavy days rather than a do-everything shell.
