What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.
Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW
- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.

- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- Fortius DW 1.0 double weave, 125 g/m2, 350 g
- UPF 50+ sun protection from the fabric itself
- Helmet-compatible StormHood, single-pull adjust
- Water repellent only: wets out in steady rain
- No insulation; needs layers in winter cold
- Packs into its hood, not into a pocket
The Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Hoody is a men's uninsulated softshell jacket for dry, warm or windy mountain days: hiking, rock climbing and summer alpine use. It is built from a 125 g/m2 Fortius DW 1.0 double weave with four-way stretch and air permeability, weighs 350 grams, and carries a helmet-compatible StormHood plus UPF 50+ sun protection from the fabric itself. There is no membrane and no insulation, so it works as a wind and abrasion layer rather than as a waterproof or warm jacket.
Who is this softshell for?
The Gamma Lightweight Hoody suits hikers and climbers who want one stretchy, wind-resistant layer with a hood that fits over a climbing or ski helmet, and who already own a waterproof shell for the rain. It is not the jacket for resort or freeride skiing in wet snow, not for sustained rain, and not for standing around in winter cold without insulating layers underneath. If you want a jacket that stuffs into its own pocket, look elsewhere: this one folds into its hood only.
How weatherproof is the Gamma Lightweight Hoody?
The face fabric has an FC0-DWR finish and is PFAS compliant, so light moisture and short showers bead and run off. In prolonged or heavy rain the fabric wets out, because no waterproof membrane is used and no water column applies. The weave is air permeable: it cuts wind on a ridge or a belay, but it is wind resistant rather than fully windproof, and it lets heat escape through the fabric itself. UPF 50+ protection covers only the areas the garment covers, and can drop when the fabric is stretched or wet.
Which size should you choose?
This is Arc'teryx regular fit: cut comfortably through chest, waist, hip and thigh, and patterned to be worn over or under other layers. In size M the centre back length is 73.5 cm; size L measures 127.1 cm chest width and 76.0 cm centre back length. Measure your chest and compare it with the men's tops size chart on this page before ordering, and pick the size that leaves room for the midlayer you plan to wear underneath in colder weather. Here the hoody is offered in M, L and XL.
How is the Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Hoody constructed?
The body of the Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Hoody is a single layer of Fortius DW 1.0 woven double weave, 125 g/m2, made up of 86% nylon and 14% elastane. Contrast panels use a 70d nylon/spandex plain weave at 123 g/m2, 94% nylon and 6% elastane, finished with FC0 DWR. There is no laminate and no lining fabric, which is why the whole softshell jacket comes in at 350 grams. Articulated patterning through the shoulders and elbows keeps the sleeves in place when you reach overhead, stretch binding closes the cuffs without tabs, and a drawcord pulls the hem in against wind. Two zippered chest pockets and two zippered hand pockets sit outside the fabric, and the adjustable StormHood is sized to go over a helmet and tightens with a single pull.
Can you use the Gamma Lightweight Hoody for ski touring and climbing?
On a cold, dry touring day the Gamma Lightweight Hoody works as a leave-it-on outer layer: the stretch weave follows the skinning stride, the fabric breathes through the weave instead of through vents, and the hood goes over a helmet at the top. On rock and boulder days it takes abrasion against granite and keeps the sun off with UPF 50+. Where it stops is clear. No RECCO reflector, no powder skirt and no ski-specific hardware are part of this jacket, and with no insulation anywhere in the garment you need insulating layers underneath once the temperature drops. For lift-served skiing in wet snow, or for any day with steady rain in the forecast, use a waterproof hardshell instead. In mild weather at high output, the air-permeable weave can feel warmer than a thin wind layer.
What are the materials and how do you wash it?
Nylon with elastane gives the Gamma Lightweight Hoody its four-way stretch and its resistance to scuffing, while the 125 g/m2 weight keeps the jacket light; it is a lighter face fabric than the heavier Fortius weaves used elsewhere in the Gamma family. Machine wash at a low temperature, rinse twice and skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres and blunts the DWR finish. Tumble dry on normal low heat, iron low if needed, and keep dark colours separate in the wash. Do not bleach and do not dry clean. Like other synthetic garments, it can release plastic microfibres into the water system when washed, so wash it only when it needs it.
How sustainable is this jacket?
The Fortius 1.0 softshell fabric is made with recycled nylon, and the jacket contains materials produced through processes that meet bluesign criteria, with shell and lining listed as bluepass materials. The DWR finish is PFAS compliant. Sewing takes place in a Fair Trade Certified facility, Mensa Industries Company Limited in Vietnam.
