What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.
Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW
- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
- Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
- If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 90 g knit beanie in 100% recycled polyester
- Six dart construction, roomier crown volume
- PFAS compliant and Fair Trade Certified
- No wind or water protection: bare knit only
- One size (OSFA), no fit adjustment
- Hand wash cold and dry flat only
The Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque is a unisex knit beanie in 100% recycled polyester, made for warmth on the chairlift, on an approach and in town. It weighs 90 grams in its single OSFA size and uses a six dart construction to shape the crown. Both the Arc'teryx Bird logo and the word logo are carried on the hat, and the word logo stays out of sight when the toque is worn unfolded.
Who is the Bird Word Toque for?
This is for the skier or mountain user who wants one logo beanie that covers resort days, ski touring, freeride and alpine use as well as travel and town. The Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque is not the hat for sustained rain or wet snow, because it has no membrane and no water-repellent finish. It is also not a wind barrier: the knit lets air through, so in strong wind you want a hood or a wind-resistant hat instead. If you need a low-profile fit under a helmet, note that this is the higher-volume of the two Bird toques.
How warm is the Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque?
Warmth here comes from the knit itself. The Bird Word Toque is a single-layer 100% recycled polyester beanie of 90 grams with no insulation fill and no lining, which suits active winter days and standing around in still air near freezing. The air-permeable knit also lets heat escape when you work hard on a skin track. In cold wind or high-exposure conditions, pair it with a hood or choose a wind-resistant hat.
Which size should you choose?
The Bird Word Toque comes in one size only (OSFA), with no drawcord or adjustment. The cut is relaxed, with more volume through the crown for a slouchier look. Wear it folded to show the word logo, or unfolded for more coverage over the ears. Heads well outside the average range have no second size to fall back on.
How is the Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque built?
The Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque is built from a six dart construction: six shaped panels are brought together so the knit follows the curve of the head instead of bunching at the crown. There is no membrane, no laminate and no separate lining in this beanie - it is one layer of 100% recycled polyester knit, finished with the Arc'teryx Bird logo and the Arc'teryx word logo. The whole hat comes in at 90 grams, and it compresses enough to live in a jacket pocket, a hip belt pocket or the lid of a touring pack without taking up useful space.
Is the Bird Word Toque suitable for ski touring and resort days?
Arc'teryx lists this toque for alpine, touring, freeride and resort use, and that is exactly where a 90 gram knit beanie makes sense: on the lift, in the car park, at a hut, on an approach before the helmet goes on, and in town afterwards. The air-permeable knit vents heat on a climb, which is useful when the pace is high. Where the Bird Word Toque stops is weather. Without a wind barrier or a water-repellent treatment, a long exposed ridge, driving wet snow or hours of rain will push past the knit, so plan on a hood or a windproof hat for those conditions. Under a helmet it works, but the extra crown volume means it is not the flattest option available.
What is the Bird Word Toque made of and how do you wash it?
The body is 100% recycled polyester, a synthetic knit that dries quickly, holds its shape and does not absorb much moisture. Care is deliberately gentle: hand wash cold, then dry flat rather than in a machine. Do not bleach, do not iron, do not dry clean, do not use fabric softener and do not wring the hat out, as twisting distorts a knit. Dark colourways - Orca and 24K Black - should be washed separately. Several owners report that the knit surface pills with wear and that threads can work loose around the Bird logo, so treat the hat gently and avoid abrasive packing against rough shell fabrics and zips. It is manufactured in Indonesia.
What makes the Bird Word Toque a more responsible choice?
The Arc'teryx Bird Word Toque uses 100% recycled polyester rather than virgin fibre, it is PFAS compliant, and it is Fair Trade Certified, which covers the conditions under which it is sewn. One honest note on synthetics: washing polyester can release plastic microfibres into the water system, which is another reason the gentle hand wash is worth sticking to.
