What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

The Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket is a lightweight, uninsulated three-layer GORE-TEX shell jacket for men, built for hiking, ski touring and alpine days in rain, wet snow and wind. It packs down small enough to live in your pack and comes out when the weather turns. SL stands for Superlight: Arc'teryx builds this one around low weight and packability rather than maximum durability.

Who is the Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket for?

The Beta SL Jacket suits hikers and ski tourers who want one light, packable waterproof shell for weather protection and are happy to build warmth with a separate midlayer. It also covers everyday rain and wind in town and while travelling. It is the wrong jacket for deep-snow resort and freeride days: there is no powder skirt and no ski-pass pocket, and the snowsport kit is limited to a RECCO reflector. If you haul, climb rock chimneys or carry a heavy pack day after day, choose a more abrasion-resistant shell.

How waterproof and breathable is the Beta SL Jacket?

Protection comes from a three-layer GORE-TEX laminate, so the jacket is waterproof and windproof through the membrane itself rather than through a coating, and the DWR finish on the face fabric makes rain bead up and run off. Pit zips let you dump heat on a climb without opening the front zip. One point to know about the current PFAS-compliant membrane generation: the face fabric can wet out faster, which slows breathability until you wash the jacket and reactivate the DWR.

Which size should you choose?

Arc'teryx cuts the Beta SL Jacket Fitted: close through chest, waist, hip and thigh, with room for light layers but not for a thick fleece or down midlayer. Compare your own chest and waist measurements with the men's tops size chart on this page, and take the next size up if you plan to wear a bulky insulating layer underneath. The helmet-compatible StormHood and the Velcro cuffs adjust with gloves on.

How is the three-layer construction of the Beta SL Jacket put together?

The Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket is a three-layer hardshell: face fabric, GORE-TEX membrane and an inner backer are bonded into one laminate, so there is no separate lining to flap or hold water. That construction is what keeps a shell this light stable in wind and driving rain. A DWR finish on the outside keeps the face fabric from soaking up water, articulated patterning through the sleeves lets you reach overhead without pulling the hem up, and a RECCO reflector is built in. The front zip runs in one direction only, so the jacket cannot be opened from the hem over a harness.

Is the Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket suitable for ski touring?

Yes, as a packable shell for the way up and the summit. The Beta SL Jacket stays in the pack on the climb, goes on when the wind picks up, and the pit zips release heat when you keep moving. On the piste it works over an insulating midlayer. Where it stops is clear: there is no insulation at all, so standing at a lift or a belay in the cold means the warmth has to come from what you wear underneath. For deep-snow resort days the missing powder skirt and pass pocket, plus the deliberately light face fabric, make a heavier freeride shell the better tool. As an outer layer it can also sit under a second shell or a bigger parka if conditions call for it.

How do you wash and care for the Beta SL Jacket?

Care is straightforward and matters more than on a heavier shell, because the water repellency of the Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket is what keeps it breathing. Close every zip and hook-and-loop fastening, wash the jacket on its own at a medium temperature, rinse twice and skip the fabric softener. Take it out of the machine straight away rather than leaving it wet, then tumble dry on a normal cycle at medium heat. No bleach, no ironing, no dry cleaning. When rain starts sitting in the fabric instead of beading off, a wash is usually what the jacket needs.

What are the sustainability credentials of this Arc'teryx shell?

The Beta SL Jacket is PFAS compliant and contains recycled content as well as materials produced through processes that meet bluesign criteria. The fabric is dope dyed, a method that adds colour at the fibre stage, and the jacket is sewn in a Fair Trade Certified facility. Arc'teryx also notes that the fabric can release plastic microfibres into the environment when washed, which is another reason to wash it only when it genuinely needs it.

Known for its durability and reliable performance, Gore-Tex is a popular choice in winter and outdoor apparel where comfort and protection are essential.
