What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Is your purchase not quite what you expected or is the size incorrect? No problem, you can easily return your order to us. You may try on and view an item as you would in a shop, but there are some rules.
GOOD TO KNOW
- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
- Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
- If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- Three-layer GORE-TEX PRO with WaterTight zips
- DropHood fits over a helmet, adjusts with gloves
- Tougher face fabric on yoke and hood for packs
- No powder skirt and no ski pass pocket
- No insulation: warmth comes from your midlayer
- Only two zippered hand pockets
The Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket Women's is an uninsulated three-layer GORE-TEX PRO hardshell, built as the weather-protection layer for alpine climbing, mountaineering and hiking in rain, wet snow and wind. Its hybrid shell construction places a heavier, more abrasion-resistant fabric across the upper yoke and hood, where a pack and harness wear hardest, and a lighter fabric over the body. There is no insulation in it, so your warmth comes entirely from what you wear underneath.
Who is this jacket for?
This is for a woman who wants one durable shell for alpine routes, long days on the hill and touring, and who prefers to build her own warmth with midlayers instead of buying a dedicated ski jacket. It is the wrong choice if you want a ready-to-wear winter jacket, or if you ski deep snow at a resort and expect snowsport detailing: the Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket Women's has no powder skirt, no ski pass pocket and no extended drop hem.
How much weather protection does it give?
The Beta AR Jacket Women's uses a three-layer GORE-TEX PRO laminate, which is waterproof, windproof and breathable, with a bonded backer rather than a loose lining. WaterTight zippers close the hand pockets and the front. Pit zips let you dump heat on a climb without opening the jacket, and the helmet-compatible DropHood adjusts over a helmet using internal cordlocks and a precision adjustment system.
Which size should you choose?
The Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket Women's has a Regular fit: comfortable through chest, waist and hip, with room for a base layer and a light midlayer underneath. It comes in S, M and L. Measure your chest, waist and hip and compare them with the women's tops size chart on this page. If you land between two sizes, the larger gives a looser fit and the smaller a closer one. Because the Regular cut already allows for a midlayer, there is no need to size up just for layering.
How is the Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket Women's constructed?
Three layers are bonded into one fabric: a face fabric on the outside, the GORE-TEX PRO membrane in the middle and a backer laminated to the inside. That is why the Beta AR Jacket Women's has no separate lining flapping around inside, and why it keeps its weather protection whether you wear it over a base layer or over a thick fleece. The jacket uses two different face fabrics in one shell. The tougher one sits on the hood and upper yoke, the areas that rub against a pack, a harness and a rope; the lighter one covers the body. Articulated patterning through the arms and shoulders keeps the hem from lifting when you reach overhead, and glove-friendly cuff tabs plus a hem draw cord let you seal the jacket without taking your gloves off.
Is the Beta AR Jacket Women's suitable for ski touring or resort skiing?
Yes for touring, with one condition: you treat it as a shell in an adjustable system. On the way up, the pit zips and the breathable GORE-TEX PRO laminate handle the heat you generate; on the way down, you add the insulation you carried. For spring touring and alpine objectives this is exactly what the Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket Women's was designed around. At a resort it will protect you from anything the weather does, but it stops short of a ski jacket: no powder skirt to seal out snow after a fall in deep snow, no pass pocket, no longer hem, and only two zippered hand pockets to organise your day. It is also a poor choice for standing around in the cold with nothing warm underneath, because the shell adds protection, not warmth.
Which materials is it made of and how do you wash it?
The shell of the Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket Women's is a three-layer GORE-TEX PRO laminate, the construction the brand reserves for hard, sustained use rather than occasional rain. Keep it working by washing it rather than avoiding the washing machine: dirt and body oils in the face fabric are what make a hardshell feel like it has stopped breathing. Machine wash on medium, wash the jacket on its own with all zips and fastenings closed, skip the fabric softener and run a double rinse so no detergent stays in the laminate. Tumble dry on a normal cycle at medium heat. Do not bleach, do not iron and do not dry clean. Take it out of the machine straight away instead of leaving it sitting wet.
