Meer informatieWhat Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.

- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- Air-permeable softshell: breathes while climbing
- Adjustable StormHood fits over a helmet
- Fleece-backed stretch fabric, four zipped pockets
- Water-repellent only, not a waterproof shell
- No pit zips for high-output efforts
- Offered in M and L only
The Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody is a men's fleece-backed stretch softshell jacket with a hood, built to work either as a mid layer or as your outer layer on mixed-conditions mountain days. MX stands for mixed conditions: the face fabric is air-permeable and carries a DWR finish, so it blocks wind and sheds light moisture while still breathing, and the adjustable StormHood fits over a helmet. It is water-repellent, not waterproof.
Who is the Gamma MX Hoody for?
The Gamma MX Hoody suits a climber, alpinist or mountain walker who wants one durable, highly breathable layer for cold, changeable but mostly dry conditions - ice and rock climbing, bouldering, hiking and uphill travel - and who already owns a waterproof hardshell for the wet days. It is not a resort or freeride jacket: no powder skirt, pass pocket or RECCO reflector is part of this softshell. It is also not a standing-around piece in deep cold; the fleece backer gives light warmth while you move.
How weatherproof is the Gamma MX Hoody?
Arc'teryx builds this softshell with a DWR-treated, air-permeable face fabric and taped seams rather than a waterproof membrane. Wind, light drizzle and dry snow are handled; sustained rain and wet snow will eventually soak through, which is why a hardshell belongs in the pack on unsettled days. There is no pit zip ventilation, so on very high-output efforts you regulate with the front zipper and the layers underneath.
Which size should you choose?
The Gamma MX Hoody has a regular cut through chest, waist, hip and thigh, with room for a base layer and a light mid layer but not for a thick insulated midlayer. Articulated arms and shoulders keep the hem in place when you reach overhead. This style comes in M and L only, so measure your chest and waist and compare them with the men's tops size chart on this page. Between sizes, the larger gives a looser fit and the smaller a closer one; check sleeve length on the chart if you have long arms.
How is the Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody constructed?
The Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody is a single-fabric softshell: a stretch face fabric with a brushed fleece backer, finished with DWR so water beads on the surface instead of soaking in. There is no laminated membrane, which is the point - air moves through the fabric, so moisture vapour leaves while you are working hard. The seams are taped. Patterning is articulated through the arms and shoulders for overhead reaching, the StormHood is adjustable and sized to go over a helmet without cutting into your peripheral vision, and the hem closes with a drawcord. Shaped cuffs with low-profile elasticated wrist openings sit cleanly under gloves. Storage runs to four zippered pockets: two on the chest and two for the hands.
Is the Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody suitable for ski touring and climbing?
Climbing is where this garment comes from, and it is the clearest use case: ice and rock routes, bouldering and long approaches in cold, dry weather, where stretch and air permeability matter more than a waterproof rating. For ski touring and other uphill travel the Gamma MX Hoody works as the layer you climb in - wind-resistant, breathable, hood over the helmet - with a hardshell carried for the moment the weather turns. It also does cool-weather hillwalking and travel in wind and light drizzle. Where it stops is clear enough: prolonged precipitation, multi-day trips where it would be your only outer layer, lift-served resort and freeride days that call for a waterproof shell with a powder skirt, and efforts hot enough that you want mechanical venting. There is also no stated packed size, so this is a layer you wear rather than one you stuff into a small pack.
What are the materials and how do you care for the Gamma MX Hoody?
This is a fleece-backed stretch softshell with a DWR finish - a comparatively substantial layer for the warmth it gives, since the fabric does the insulating rather than a separate fill. Washing is straightforward: machine wash gentle at a low temperature, double rinse, skip the fabric softener so the DWR keeps working, and wash dark colours separately. Tumble dry low on permanent press, iron low if needed, and do not bleach or dry clean. One honest note on durability: owner feedback on this generation of the Gamma MX Hoody reports bonded pocket construction and internal layers letting go under heavy use, so inspect the pocket edges periodically if you climb in it regularly.
